Our Machine Learning work offers a rewarding mix of blue-sky research and down-to-earth engineering – Roke is looking for experienced ML engineers who are excited by the variety of different challenges these projects will present. From image processing, to text analytics, to autonomous agents, our ML engineers have to be prepared to tackle some of our customers’ thorniest problems across a range of domains.
We are looking for somebody with the technical and personal skills needed to lead teams of junior engineers – working together, you will have the opportunity to shape the projects you work on to best solve client problems. You will often be involved in the whole project lifecycle – from the moment we receive a customer requirement through to delivering a working solution.
At Roke, however, we don’t simply respond to customer demand. Through our proactive, internally funded innovation programme, we strive to ensure we have the right skills and technologies in place to solve our customers’ problems before they even arise. You will have an important role to play in helping Roke to stay ahead of the curve by influencing and undertaking this R&D.
As a technical leader, you will be responsible for helping to develop junior engineers – especially those on our graduate development programme. We are looking for somebody who is likely to be a positive role model, and is keen to help less-experienced colleagues develop their technical, business, and interpersonal skills.
We also often have opportunities for engineers to be embedded within client teams around the UK, if that’s something you’re keen to explore.
What we’re looking out for
We are looking for engineers with a proven record of Machine Learning development – you will be able to demonstrate how you have innovatively used ML to solve problems.
You will be somebody who can consider the whole product lifecycle – conceptualisation, design, development, testing and evaluation, deployment, and maintenance.
It is important that we believe you will be able to lead teams well, and provide guidance and encouragement both in terms of the technical solution, and the engineering processes needed to get there. You will be a champion for a rigorous approach to science and engineering – and in particular how we can use those approaches to deliver dependable, trustworthy AI solutions.
As a technical lead on projects, you will need to be able to present to both technical and non-technical audiences, and be responsible for building a reputation as a trusted technical partner.
In addition, the following would help you to stand out, but by no means are all of them essential:
- Strong Python background
- Experience with a variety of different machine learning and data science frameworks
- Experience with continuous integration / continuous deployment
- Experience in technical leadership for project delivery
- Experience in proposal writing
- Domain experience in an area relevant to Roke such as Healthcare, Public Sector, Defence and National Security
